Tips for a Successful EHR Implementation

Friday, September 18th, 2009

After watching the implementation of an EHR at where I work, there is a lot of effort and resource in getting an EHR up and running.  There are some aspects you should consider if your hospital is looking to implement an EHR.

- Have a well designed way of communication.  EHR often involves a lot of different parties ranging from the physicians to IT folks.  Some times technical and non-technical people have difficulties understand each other.  Check with the key players to make sure everyone is on the same page.

- Have in house expertise rather than hiring outside consultant.  It is better to hire a couple individuals who will get trained on the EHR system.  Outside consultant can get very expensive and the cost adds up over time.

- Evaluate EHR system base on how well it perform and not on cost alone.  There are a lot of criteria for evaluating EHR systems and most people will be based on the government’s stimulus funding.  However, the reimbursement of the government funding will be no where close to the actual cost of EHR implementation.  Make sure  a EHR system is selected because it fits the need.

- Anything involves computer requires training.  Develop a good training program in house for any new employees.  This is especially crucial.  A lot of EHR systems depends on how the doctor select diagnostic codes (problem list), pharmacy orders and lab test.  Make sure the physicans have a good feel on the overall flow of the system.
